The spiritual life is mysterious and threatening to active participants in collusive addictions and codependent support networks. It seems to deal with other worldly matters unrelated to the real world of work and accomplishments; for it calls into question the pseudo- truths of the world of collusions, addictions and codependence. The spiritual life is complementary to but not exclusive of the world of goals, work, achievements, and technical activities. The full healthy life involves both a spiritual life and a life of working to achieve goals through the use of techniques. The spiritual life involves stepping back from the busy life of technical procedures of working to achieve already chosen goals and ideals. The spiritual life involves rest from work, time for reflection and meditation, prayerfully seeking personal and communal integrity, reconsidering goals in the light of growing costs. The spiritual life involves evaluating the worth of the technical life, and making new judgments in the light of consequences suffered. This is different from pure technology assessment which asks how efficiently goals are being achieved without questioning the worth of trying to achieve them. In the spiritual life we may ask which of our present goals are actually worthy of our attention and the sacrifices which we are making to achieve them, and asks what prices in the quality of our personal relationships are to high to pay to achieve presently sought goals.
