For example, the truth that we will surely die. The way the truth is treated teaches us NOT to deal too realistically with it; i.e., to treat it as if it were NOT really, really true. It is not that the explicit telling of the truth is distorted; it is something about the context in which the truth is told and dealt with, which puts the truth safely away where we do not expect to have to deal with it too realistically. Truth can thus have its sting taken away; be sugar coated so that it is hidden inside the coating. Such truths can be possessed in a safe way, in a way which is not as troublesome as if they were not put safely away. Truths which have been put safely away may truthfully be recited without distortion; but because they have been put safely away from really touching us, they do not trouble us as they would if they had not been put safely away. When such painful truths have been put safely away the verbalization of them does not reach us with power; just as recitations of statements of religious faith often do not reach us with power. Putting them away does not mean that they are totally out of mind; it is more like they are out of heart and soul, even when present in the mind and the social rituals. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
