Operative limits may be clarified by such attempts. Often the mediums of our expressions are as much our messages, as are the conscious contents which we seek to contain and convey in our chosen mediums of expression. Too rarely do we recognize that we are unable to give expression to some of our experiences because we choose not to use unfamiliar mediums of expression. In the absence of skill in unfamiliar mediums of expression, we cannot honestly share with each other that which we experience and know in inexpressible ways. We imprison ourselves in limited mediums of expression. When we are imprisoned in limited mediums of expression we need to use those mediums of expression which we know how to use, to try to give expression of whatever limited awareness we have of how our limited mediums of expression imprison us. People who know only one verbal language need to experience the learning of another verbal language, to better understand their native verbal language. People who have never learned the language of quantitative thought and communication in its various dialects would do well to consider such languages and the liberation they offer to people who are imprisoned in purely qualitative mediums of communication. Without such languages of quantitative consideration many questions, answers, relationships, insights, and solutions cannot be considered, discovered or communicated. People who have never learned any of the languages of computer programming are unable to understand and communicate the kinds discoveries and knowledge which are characteristic to computer processes; and are unable to recognize the severe limitations which such languages and processes have. People who are addicted to quantitative and computational languages may be unable to use qualitative languages with any authentic skill, and may be illiterate when it comes to giving expression to and/or being receptive to other peoples' expressions of their non- quantitative experiences and perceptions. Much is communicated without defined words or formal symbols playing a central role. There are languages in which the vocabulary cannot be found in any dictionary or text, and of which the grammar is not formally defined in any text. Such nonverbal and informal languages play a significant role in human relationships. People who assume and believe to the contrary cut themselves off from the kinds of communications which are appropriate to the informal mediums of communication. They need to find ways to try to give expression to whatever level of awareness they may have of their isolation due to language deprivation. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
