It is important to analyze ideals and values as well as to analyze the technologies which are used to further ideals and values. Some ideals and values are such that by their peculiar character they lead people to engage in coercive and violent behavior. The values and ideals which have such a character must be recognized as such to avoid their misleading aspects. Scholars all to often become specialized and narrow in their analysis by virtue of being bound by traditions which are embedded in their literature. If respect is measured out in terms of references and citations to previous literature, more than in terms of originality and creativity, the scholarly community is imprisoned in the past. Yet, if the past is ignored and forgotten, its mistakes will be repeated out of ignorance. It is not easy to study the past in depth without being a participant in all its traditional collusions and in the fulfillment of all its coercive and violent ideals and values. Only genuinely creative people can study the past without being imprisoned by it. We need to study the past to understand why in the past there has been so much dishonesty, coercion, violence, and imprisonment in collusions, addictions and codependent behaviors. We should study the past with a passion for open and honest dialogue about the mistakes made in choices of which ideals and values to embody. We cannot learn from the past without seeking to transcend the misleading ideals and values which misled people in the past. Technocrats do not ask questions about ideals and values; but about how to fulfill unquestioned ideals and values. The arms race is a tragic example of the leadership offered by technocrats. If the study of the past is dominated by the values of the scientific and technocratic paradigms, the study will be so narrow and specialized as to miss the lessons which might be learned by an informed honest study of the past. The scientific and technocratic paradigms regard objectivity and analysis as being of supreme value. There is much of great value which is not objective and which cannot be understood by taking it apart through analysis. The scientific and technocratic paradigms are misleading when it deals with ideals and values. They are not trustworthy when it comes to making an effort to identify coercive and violent values.
