The wider and richer are such patterns, the more tools the members of the community have with which to approach their challenges. The richness of community life depends upon the richness of the tools available to it, and upon the wisdom of the members in selecting tools with which to approach their challenges. Patterns are tools. Some of the patterns have to do with the very process of selecting tools of thought, feeling, attitudes and joys which are available while coping with the challenges of life. Wisdom has to do with the patterns of choice and the range of choices which are recognized as being available. Poor people have few choices recognized as being available, and few patterns for making choices wisely. Rich people have many such choices and patterns to lead them. The two cultures split between the poor and the rich people and nations pertains not so much to what they posers and control, as to their leading patterns of thought, feeling, attitudes and joys. The poor are often poor because they seek to possess and control rather than seek to share their patterns of thought, feeling, attitudes and joys. Their efforts to possess and control undermine their possibilities of enriching each other through sharing. They are poor because of their addictive patterns of thought, feelings, attitudes and desperation. They may become rich by choosing to focus their attentions upon different patterns which will lead them into sharing what they have; in open and honest dialogue about their experiences and what they have learned from their own experiences. They may then be willing to own their own experiences, and to learn from them. Learning from personal experiences can be an enriching experience. Such learning and enrichment is not possible without openness and honesty about personal experiences and what they mean and signify. Efforts to own and control things and people often get in the way of learning through sharing openly and honestly the personal experiences of daily life. In the absence of the sharing of helpful patterns of thought, feelings, attitudes and joys; the members of a community learn little and forget much. That which is associated with pain is often forgotten in self defense. If the patterns of thought, feelings, attitudes and desperations of a community lead to the members having much pain in their experiences; the members are likely to forget much about their experiences and to learn little from them. It is dangerous to focus our lives patterns that lead to forgetting much in pain. It is wise to focus our lives patterns that lead to learning much in joyful dialogue. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
