It is dangerous to fail to discriminate between significant differences and to treat different realities as if there were no differences between them. It is also difficult to wisely select the kinds of discriminations to make, and how to respond to the recognitions of the important differences which do exist. One kind of discrimination is at the level of description. Descriptions can point to differences clearly or ambiguously, fairly or unfairly, accurately or with distortion. There are differences among descriptions and what those differences in description lead to. We must make judgments as to the integrative/disintegrative implications of various descriptions which we and others offer each other. Such judgments are clouded by our participation in collusions, taboos and guilt trips. A second kind of discrimination has to do with the discriminative selection of central values, ideals and goals for our lives. Not all of them are of equal consequence: some lead to communal/personal disintegration and others to communal/personal integrity. It is important that we be able to describe accurately and share such accurate descriptions of the consequences of our choices as regards values, ideals and goals. Our affirmations of our primary ideals, values and goals in part depend upon our descriptions of them, and how we respond to descriptions of subsidiary ideals and the consequences to which they lead. A third kind of discrimination has to do with how we perceive people in terms of our ideals, values and goals; and how we describe people: acceptable or unacceptable. We make discriminating judgments in terms of how we believe we should deal with people. It makes important differences to us and to others as to just how we regard differences between us. Disintegration flows from the belief that it is helpful to reject people who are different in certain ways, and accept people who are like us in certain ways. A life full of personal rejections/acceptances is a life leading to communal and personal disintegration. We need to be able to describe that reality accurately and without fear. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
