%COMPETING COHERENT INTEGRATIVE SYSTEMS 870523
Disintegrative systems do not survive for long.
To survive an organism must be internally integrative
and draw upon resources outside of itself to integrate
them into itself according to its internal coherent
principles. In doing so an organism breaks down the
organization of the resources drawn upon, and reorganizes
them to meet its own needs for internal coherence and
integrity in its own way of being itself with integrity.
To survive an organism must draw upon the existing
degree of organization of the resources upon which it
draws. Reducing them to high levels of entropy does not
serve to promote survival, except as the consequence of
drawing upon available energy present in the high level
organization.
An organism may draw upon highly organized resources
as a source of energy and/or as a source of organized
resources to be used as building materials. Entropic
resources do not serve well as building materials in the
absence of generous supplies of concentrated energy
available in other highly organized resources.
The integration of new structures thus is made
possible by drawing upon organized raw materials and upon
sources of concentrated available energy.
