The situation is not fundamentally different if a person has had injected into themselves, or has internalized into themselves controlling principles, attitudes, values, ideals, or role models, Without integration internal personal considerations will not be congruent with the externally originated control. All human attempts at achieving control run the risk of producing the internalization of control without integration, and so the generation of conflict without the foundations for integrative conflict resolution. Such conflict is bound to generate alienation, estrangement, misunderstanding and frustration; with attendant tendencies toward various forms of violence. Achieving control may be appropriate in some circumstances, but it clearly is not appropriate in all circumstances. It is important to recognize the difference between circumstances where the achievement of control is helpful and circumstances where the achievement of control is disintegrative. All too often people get the message that they should try to be in control of all kinds of circumstances, without discriminating between circumstances. Control is not appropriate where it is prone to generate personal and communal conflict, alienation and disintegration. People who have the right to make decisions for themselves can not be controlled without disintegrative consequences. Influence needs to be negotiated to achieve mutual satisfaction and mutual respect with power, freedom, influence, costs, and benefits---balanced in ways which facilitate mutual openness, honesty, dialogue, and cooperation. The achievement of control is not an appropriate ultimate goal and when regarded as an ultimate goal; disintegration results. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
