To some people---openly and honestly dealing with self-referential difficulties is easy and natural. They enter into and develop mature interpersonal relationships naturally and easily. They feel comfortable entering into intimate relationships which entail mutual vulnerability and respect. They feel free to talk about themselves and share themselves in intimate dialogue. It is not so with all people. There are people who find it very difficult to deal with reflexive dilemmas. Any dilemmas with entail self-referential considerations are dilemmas which entail difficulties which they can not understand or deal with creatively. Yet often they are experts in dealing with technical problems which do not entail reflexive considerations. So long as the technical problems require only objectivity they do not have reflexive difficulties. They have been trained to be objective by avoiding reflexive situations, and so are objectively skilled at the price of being reflexively incompetent---and regard such incompetence as a virtue! To be objective one must not be reflexive because in being reflexive one inevitably becomes emotionally involved in that upon which one focuses one's attention. To excel in objectivity one must always be objective, especially if excellence is to be judged in terms of measurable attributes which may be assessed objectively. The percentage of one's waking time spent in the objective state of consciousness may be taken as a measure of one's dedication to objectivity. To excel in this measure one must avoid reflexive considerations, and so one will have difficulties with reflexive dilemmas; the price one must pay for such thoughtless dedication to objectivity. It is thoughtless because thoughtful reflexive considerations are taboo according to the dominant collusion of scientists. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
